If 40 is the new 30, why do we see fashion tips for 40 plus style being a bit of a miss than a hit? Sometimes the tips we see are overwhelming, too complicated or just plain unrealistic. Our fashion gurus here at T&J have formulated a helpful guide to ensure that you feel Fabulous at 40.
We are going to be focusing on the following areas: Everyday, Formal Attire, Accessories, Dos & Don'ts
A good starting point to looking fabulous at 40 is to discover what style is right for you. We suggest getting some fashion after 40 inspiration. The easiest way to do this is by looking at beautiful women over 40 in magazines, on TV, even online; Pinterest is a good place for this. We have used Emmanuelle Alt, director-in-chief at Vogue Paris, for our how to dress at 40 inspiration.
Blazers aren't just for formal occasions y'know. If you're wearing a plain shirt, you can either accentuate this or distract from this feature. The military style blazers from Missguided are ideal for a neutral look. If you like a pop of colour in your wardrobe try the gold textured blazer by Debenhams.
You can still wear jeans and look fabulous at 40! The secret is to invest in good quality denim. Brands such as Levi, Wrangler and Lee fit the bill. Just remember, aim for mid or high-rise jeans, don't be afraid of showing a little ankle and remember that skinny jeans should be no lighter than mid-blue.
Important 40 Something Fashion Tip: When buying dresses and skirts for formal occasions (and even casual), the ideal length for fashionable women at 40 is around knee length. A-line and midi styles are your new best friends. M&S are currently doing some great designs that support this tip. These fantastic midi dresses can be worn at Summer parties, to black-tie events, at weddings or for work.
Don't be afraid of a little texture or colour in your outfit. Many women over 40 look absolutely fabulous (and slimmer) in colourful dresses than the LBD. The plisse double layered shift dress (left) and the shutter pleat floral lace shift dress (right) are perfect examples of this.
The colour block dress; dramatic without being over the top. If you want to make a fabulous at 40 statement these dresses are ideal. One thing we will say about fashion after 40 is that it's definitely not boring! Shop colour block dresses here.
A woman can never have too many accessories right? The two main areas we are going to be focusing on so you can be fabulous at 40 are scarves and bags.
Eccentric scarves are a wardrobe essential for any women who is 40 and fabulous. Some of our top favourites include the Rachele by Elizabetta featured here on T&J, this Zoom Swirl Print Scarf by Jaegar and the Esme Silk Blend Scarf by Joules. Colourful scarves like these are great for waking up a dull outfit and are a fantastic accessory for when you want to mix and match.
Structured bags will immediately make your look more polished. The fantastic thing about the structured bag is that it can come in a range of different styles, including the cross body, shoulder, clutch and even tote. Just remember to think about what works best for you. T&J have a fantastic collection of structured leather handbags. A couple of our key favourites include Charlotte and Anastasia (featured below) by Boldrini Selleria.
Dos & Don'ts
We've come up with a few 40 something fashion dos and don'ts which can help keep you being fabulous after 40.
Do experiment with mixing prints. Fashion after 40 doesn't need to be boring! There are several ways to do this, but a good rule to follow is to choose one print to dominate and one print to accentuate. Try wearing a floral shirt (dominate) with stripped trousers (accentuate). It's also helpful to wear a belt when mixing print to highlight the split. Just remember, Don't wear leopard print - this print will add unneeded years to your look.
Don't wear a hat to a formal event, instead, Do wear statement jewellery. The key here is that less is more. For example, say you're wearing dangling earrings - avoid wearing a bulky necklace as well because the earrings are your statement jewellery piece.
Do check your body measurements - this can save a lot of time and money. Knowing your body measurements can help you discover styles that work for your body type whilst simultaneously helping you develop a signature look. Trends are no longer your best friend as they are targetted at the younger generation.
Don't dress younger than you are - being 40 and fabulous means looking chic not cute! It's time to say goodbye to the mega high heels, boob-tubes and cropped denim shorts.
